Large language models in transitive design | Matyáš Bureš

The project explores the possibilities of using large language models to simulate human behavior and predict attitudes toward various future scenarios in the context of transitive design. It has gradually expanded from a narrow focus on simulation to a more general use of generative AI in transitive design methods.

The goal was to explore how LLMs can help test speculative scenarios and create detailed visions of possible futures. The project involves experimenting with AI-powered analysis of in-depth interviews, creating visions of the future through videos, and developing interactive web applications for inspiration in the Experiential Futures Ladder method.

The result is an artifact in the form of a video depicting a possible future using AI to test design scenarios, a functional web application for generating everyday scenarios of different people in the context of the climate crisis, and a comprehensive analysis of prediction possibilities in complex social systems.

Ethics: The project addresses risks such as deepening the status quo, confirmation bias, unverifiability, and the black-box effect. It pays particular attention to the potential misuse of "totalitarian testing" and the issue of the moral circle in creating future scenarios. It proposes mitigation strategies based on the values and processes surrounding the system.

AI TOOLS USED IN THE PROJECT

  1. Perplexity AI (Search and Deep Research) – primary tool for research, analysis, summarization, comparison of different modes
  2. ChatGPT 4.o – image generation for video artifacts, feedback on topics
  3. Claude – information verification and alternative perspectives
  4. Consensus.app – searching for relevant academic research and studies
  5. NotebookLM – synthesis of information from research papers, analysis of transitive design sources
  6. Kling AI – generating videos and video sequences for future artifacts
  7. Suno AI – generating music for video projects
  8. MM audio – generating background sounds for generated footage
  9. Napkin.ai – visualizing insights from interview analysis
  10. Gamma AI – creating the final project presentation
  11. Perplexity Labs – creating interactive web applications for the Experiential Futures Ladder
