Libraries and Library Studies at KISK

Libraries still have a place in the 21st century.

Even today, libraries play an important role in people’s lives. They help them satisfy their information needs and find their way in the abundance of information available.

Libraries can build on their ancient tradition, but they should be at the same time able to provide modern services connected with the online environment. At KISK we have a long-standing commitment to fulfilling this vision.

We are always on the lookout for the latest developments in the field of libraries and library studies, both domestically and worldwide. And we make every effort to transfer our experience to the library environment by means of our projects and other activities.

We test these new trends in practice. A great help in this process is our Knihovna Na Křižovatce (Library at the Crossroads). It is an experimental library of the Division of Information and Library Studies (KISK) at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, run by our students. Here we apply new approaches and are trying to put the knowledge gained by instruction into practice. We also experiment in some of the courses that we offer.

Our aim is to educate information professionals that will have the right knowledge and skills for practice. Expert lectures, excursions to libraries and other memory institutions form an integral part of the studies. Students can realize their potential in field projects and library internships are a natural part of the package.
