About the Division of Information and Library Studies

The division's mission is to improve and develop quality in the education of information specialists and professionals, as well as to contribute to a production of new findings. The division supports social development in a dynamically developing information environment.

The Division mainly focuses on:

  • new technologies and development trends,
  • competitive intelligence, information literacy, and social informatics,
  • development of soft skills in information and library studies.

The vision:

  • support of the development of new online education applications,
  • cooperation with commercial subjects on a transfer of knowledge to education and vice versa,
  • involvement of students in a promotion of information literacy at the university.

History

The field of study in library science specializing on bibliology has been accredited at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, since 1992. It has been gradually enlarged by information science. The conception of the studies in this form has been realized as Information and Library Studies since 2001.

The present

Information and Library Studies are offered at the Faculty of Arts (Masaryk University), in three programs of studies: three-year Bachelor's and two-year Master's degree programs and life-long education in full-time as well as combined forms. The studies are designed as transdisciplinary in connection with the Faculty of Informatics and the Faculty of Social Sciences, MU. Thus, interdisciplinarity is provided for the field of studies which embraces aspects of humanities as well as natural sciences. Versatility and skills in the use of modern technologies offer to our graduates numerous possibilities of employment in non-commercial and commercial sectors.

Graduate employment

How successful are our graduates in their careers? Masaryk University holds a survey among Master's degree graduates each two years to learn about their employment careers and retrospective evaluation of their university education. The last survey shows that graduates of Information and Library Studies are among the best paid specialists.

Projects and Cooperation

The Division of Information and Library Studies has a policy of a permanent development and active connection between teaching and practice. This is why the Division conducts research of a number of projects in the field of Information and Library Studies.

We also believe that the connection between studies and practice enhances our students' skills and experience, and helps to prepare them for their future information careers.

The Division of Information and Library Studies MU:

  • is the main researcher of a number of projects from OP EC, Czech Ministry of Education, Public Library Information Services (VISK),
  • actively supports more than 20 partner and student projects in the field,
  • regularly organizes lectures by experts,
  • offers practice-oriented theses in cooperation with other institutions,
  • cooperates with international institutions,
  • offers solutions to companies and libraries in the fields of knowledge organisation and management, information searching, information systems design, and other fields of information science.
